Cinema: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

imageOh. My. God. I absolutely loved this. I didn’t think I would. And it started out a little slow, but just kept building. How can you not like a move with trained squirrels?? The colors were all bright. Johnny Depp was increadibly creepy as his Michael Jackson wannabe Willy Wonka. And the Oompa Loompas were just funny.

OK, now some of this probably wont’ age well or survive multiple viewings. And you probably have to be in the correct state of mind. Now, Brandy said the correct state of mind for this movie is essentially “altered”, preferably “highly altered”. Or something like that. But since I pretty much always am a bit off, I was in the perfect state of mind. Especially after several days of not enough sleep as I went on my little adventures last week. I was probably on about half the amount of sleep I should have had when I saw the movie.

I am sure that helped.

But I was laughing pretty much straight through, and so was Brandy. Amy was too, but I suspect she was laughing at different things.

There is not one moment of this film that can be taken seriously. There is no super thrilling plot. No suspense. No real character development. No sense that you really CARE what happens to any of the characters. No mystery. None of the things that normally make one really get into a movie. But it is just FUN. If you try to think about it too much, it won’t be fun. But if you just let yourself, it is an enjoyable journey. As Brandy told me, a somewhat disturbing enjoyable journey, but hey, aren’t the most enjoyable ones always that way?

Cinema: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

imageSo Saturday afternoon we needed to go to Vero to retreive Brandy’s car. (Remember, she was partying earlier in the weekend. :-) So since we had driven way out there, we decided we’d catch a movie while there. The kid appropriate choices were basically Madagascar and this one. Amy saw Madagascar first, and was chanting that, until she saw the Pants. Then she changed her tune, and it was decided. This was what we would see.

Basic plot: Four teenagers, friends for life, seperating for the summer. They decide to mail a pair of pants back and forth. Through the travels of the pants, we watch the emotional travels of the three girls as they each grow up in different ways.

I think we were basically seeing this because Rory Gilmore was in it. She is cute, but she was really skinny in this one. As they say, she needs to eat a sammich. I think the other girl with the blue hair was the best of the four girls though in terms of her performance.

Anyway, the immediate comparison here is to Raising Helen, since I’d just watched it a couple days earlier. RH is a bit more lightweight of a movie. It has the death of the sister and such, but mostly tries not to be TOO serious. Traveling pants has its light moments, but is definately more serious, and has more depth to it. You get four stories, each of which you care about. I think the blue haired girl’s is the most poignant. But they all have their moments. Rory’s is mostly happy though. She gets to find first love. The other three end up less happy, but grow from it, etc.

At various points in the movie, there were people crying all over the theater. And that is one of my main criterea for a good movie. You’ve gotta cry! And this one does that.

So, I liked this movie. Madagascar might have been fun too, but I’m glad Amy picked this one.

Cinema: Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

imageWell, never did finish Episode II. Would probably have been able to finish it in line… well, I know I would have, I was more than half way through it and we were in line for almost two hours… but once I had Amy I let her start it from the beginning, and we got maybe 3/4 through. Oh well. I rememebred enough.

So, got into Sith of course. I don’t have time for any long comments right now, but I’ll basically echo what most of the reviews I have seen said. As long as you are expecting Star Wars, and not something more high brow, then it is awesome. This is a real Star Wars, not like the dreck of Episode I, or the a bit better but still disappointingness of Episode II. Sure, there are some parts that can be nitpicked if you think too much, and parts are still over CGI’d at the expense of story, but hey, it is Star Wars. Let go of all that, and it is great. You see everything you would expect to see and it is done pretty well.

Of all the Star Wars on first blush I am actually tempted to say it is the best of the six. If not, it is close. The stuff I liked with Vader/Luke/Emporer in VI is here in III plus some. Could they have spent a bit more time on that? Probably. (Especially if they hadn’t wasted Episodes I & II, but oh well…) But it was still good.

Oh well, I do not have time for more. I need to run out the door to head to the airport. I’m heading to Pittsburgh for approximately 24 hours for a friend’s wedding.
