Lovely, huh? I was trying to do an obstacle course Alex had built in our driveway. I was on my bike. I fell. Crunched my foot between a wooden 4×4 and my bike. It wasn’t a hard fall, and at first I thought it was nothing and I would just get up and brush it off. That idea disappeared once I tried to stand up.
After a night of crawling slowly from room to room since I couldn’t stand or walk, and with even the crawling resulting in quite a bit of pain, Brandy made me go to the doctor. :-)
For now I have a boot on my left foot and I’ve got some crutches. I’ve been referred to an orthopedic office to see exactly what more they want to do with me. Sounds like it will probably be more than just the boot. In the mean time, I’m hobbling around the house, but even going from room to room is a fairly big effort, and often quite painful. The doctor says no weight at all on the foot if I don’t want to make it worse, and that I need to minimize how much I’m up and around.
So I’m thinking I have lots of working from home in my immediate future, and probably quite a bit of time just in bed or on the couch. Sounds like minimum 4 to 6 weeks to heal, possibly more.
Sigh.
But hey, at age 44 this is my first broken bone ever, so I guess I did pretty well…
Boots? You need to get those ones Spock had in V.
The levitation boots? That would be quite nice about now…
Yikes! :(
Yeah…
So sorry Sam. and listen to your doctors. I broke the same bone, (age 47)decided to go on with my life as usual and as a result have that foot one half size bigger than the other, different shape. It doesnВґt hurt though! Unfortunately, I couldnВґt work from home. :-(
Your athletic skills never cease to amaze!
Wow–when I had a broken little toe they did nothing for me but give me a crutch and say try not to walk on it for 6 wks.
Hang in there – you getting a bit of rest is not a bad idea – the doctors will eventually complete getting foot stabilized and it will begin to heal and you will find ways to do stuff that right now seem impossible. You won’t get a whole 4-6 weeks off though even if foot is not in use that long!!!! :-) Thinking of you and know you’ll find a way through the pain. It will get better than it begins!
Oh no!
That sucks!!!
listen to doctors an get well soon.
Feel better and heal!
Ouch.
Not recommended! I hope you heal quickly!
Sounds awful. Teaches you not to pretend like you are 5.

This is one of the major bones- and he broke it right through.
Take it easy, Sam. Hope you feel better soon.
Next time you do an Alex obstacle course, wear protective gear including biker boots!
ooh–ouch!!! Guess I can’t call him a wimp then!!
Lol. You can still call him a wimp. :-).
Seriously though, this type/location of break can be hard enough to stabilize that it may actually require surgery to repair.
Not sure he could have chosen a worse foot bone to break.
I broke that same bone in a ballet class, Sam. I wonder whether the family trait is a weak foot bone — or adults’ attempting to do things we are *almost* coordinated enough for…
Well that’s not good. I hope it heals correctly and he doesn’t need surgery!!
I hope so too!
Thanks everybody for all your thoughts. I of course will do my best to follow doctor’s orders, and hopefully the recovery won’t be TOO bad. But 46 hours or so since this started, it sure is disruptive so far! I basically can’t do anything without a struggle. Very frustrating!
OMG! That isn’t good at all. Poor Sam. :-(

Oh my goodness! Hope your recovery time is shorter than your Dad’s. Hell of an obstacle course, eh?п»ї
From Sam M via Google+ at 5:34 UTC
Oh yes. Quite an obstacle course! I’ll get it right next time!п»ї
@RB: I won’t get a whole six weeks off? Don’t say that! I was counting on it!
@DM: You broke that same bone too? So me, my dad, my aunt, and a cousin (on my mom’s side) all breaking the same bone. Our families must not like that bone!
